Grasmere is a small village in the heart of the lake District of north-western England.
The village is one of the most popular destinations in the Lake District, visited by many tens of thousands of people each year. There are several reasons for this enormous appeal, and which attract people from all over the world to come to Grasmere:
- it is an attractive traditional Lakeland village, with 19th century granite houses lining the main open square and the main street, along with a notable number of hotels, gift shops, guest houses etc…the square is often bustling with both visitors and groups setting off for (or returning from) adventures in the countryside around Grasmere
- pretty much adjacent to the village is Grasmere Lake. This is a very picturesque spot, and leads quickly to Rydal Water, another very scenic lake
- Grasmere is centrally placed in the Lake District and a good base for hikers, either day-trippers simply hoping to amble around the lake, or serious enthusiasts who are planning an adventure on the fells. There are trails to suit all abiilities close to Grasmere.
- William Wordsworth and his family spent many years here in Grasmere. In total Wordsworth lived in four different properties here – it is Dove Cottage (the first place where he lived) and the house at Rydal Mount that attract the most attention, along with the village church – Wordsworth is buried in the cemetery.
