Malaysia has an extensive and high quality transportation system and it is no wonder that it is easy to make your way to Melaka. Visitors have a choice of travelling by air, road or rail and even through some cruise ships.
The most common mode of entry into Melaka is by road. Melaka is served by the North-South Expressway which runs along the west coast of the Malay Peninsula and there are a few exit points – Ayer Keroh, Simpang Ampat and Jasin. If you are heading for Melaka city, exit at Ayer Keroh, which is the nearest point to the city centre. If your destination is the A’ Famosa Resort, take the Simpang Ampat exit.
Many express buses travel to Melaka daily from the main cities of Malaysia such as Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang and other smaller towns. There are also express buses which take passengers directly from Singapore to Melaka. Alternatively, you can take taxis from these other cities or towns directly to Melaka but their fares are undoubtedly much more than what the express buses offer. Car rentals from prominent companies such as Avis, Hertz and Mayflower are also available especially from bigger cities like Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru and Penang.
There is no railway station in Melaka and the nearest railway station is located in Tampin, Negeri Sembilan – which is about 30 minutes drive away. A fleet of taxis would be able to ferry you from the railway station to Melaka. This railway station serves trains coming from Singapore, Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur and travelling by train enables you to view the quaint countryside of Malaysia as well as giving you the opportunity of seeing oil palm and rubber plantations along the way.
Though there is a small airport in Melaka at Batu Berendam, air travel into Melaka is not as popular mainly due to its close proximity by road to the major cities of Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru. As such, most travellers who are coming in by air would disembark at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, Selangor and take a taxi down to Melaka – approximately 100km distance away or about an hour’s drive.
