Those that are looking for a combination of adventure and relaxation on their vacation may just find the perfect spot in Karamea, New Zealand. It is here that you will find beaches, parks, rain forests and some of the most wonderful limestone formations in existence on earth.
This quiet town that sits about an hour’s drive from Westport sits between the Tasman Sea and huge mountains that are part of Kahurangi National Park. There is so much to see and do within this hidden treasure that the only hard decision you will have is which to do first!
Be sure to bring your hiking boots on your trip to Karamea, as the abundance of walking trails are sure to lure you into trying out at least one of them. They all have different difficulty levels and different scenery so it’s best to know what you’re looking for before you head out for your long walk.
The Heaphy Track is one of the most popular trails in the area. It is only on this trail that you will have the opportunity to see rainforest, beautiful palm trees and tussock downs. Although it is rated as easy for its difficulty level, it is 82 kilometers long and will take approximately four to six days to complete the entire hike.
If you don’t have that much time you may want to try the Lake Waikaremoana Track. This trail is 46 kilometers long and will take three to four days to complete. Along this beautiful walk, you will enjoy the view of some of lush forest and breathtaking lakes.
If you’re interested in a different kind of walk you must check out the Oparara Basin Guided Tours. It is on these tours that you can see vast caves made from natural limestone. The caves are also located in Kahurangi National Park.
If you prefer to be out on the open sea, Karamea has many activities for you as well. Take a five-day canoe trip along the Whanganui River, located with the Whanganui National Park and it is here that you will experience first-hand some of the most beautiful waterfalls you have ever seen. Bridges cross vast gorges that allow you to leave the water and settle in a cozy spot in the forest for the evening, or simply just to explore the land and gaze in wonder at the cascading water, the abundant forests and listen to the birds and other nature that are continually chirping out songs.
These are just a few of the activities that one must dabble in when they visit this unique and beautiful area.
There is also an 18-hole golf course right along the coast, mountain bike trails with bikes that can be rented from local Karamea merchants, kayaking, fishing, and sunsets abound are just a few of the things that you will be able to do in this town that is truly at the end of the road.
